Women's Healthcare, Washington State, Abortion and Providence Health Plan

Women's health is important. Not only are they half the population, women are capable of carrying the next generation. With the U.S. maternal mortality rate more than doubling from 1991 to 2014, we can do better. Yes, women's healthcare is tremendously important if we are focused on improving our nation.
Together we can change.

We are seeing some cause and effect results of bad policies. Cervical Cancer mortality rates rise as women's health clinics close. Researchers found this trend as nearly 100 women's health clinics across the county closed from 2010 to 2013. The greatest impacted under these closures were Hispanic, uninsured and young women. The closure of these clinics reduced screening and because cancer was identified later increased deaths.

Gender bias can have catastrophic results. Women may have different complaints than men — even with similar health conditions — and they experience pain differently, but most doctors are trained to identify and treat symptoms in men, making it less likely to correctly diagnose female patients, the experts warned. Women with acute abdominal pain in the emergency room waiting longer to receive pain medication than men. Even when women speak up they can face healthcare challenges.

Talking about Healthcare is important.
Breast Cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women with it being the seconding leading cause of cancer death. One in eight women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime with it killing one in thirty nine. There is a higher breast cancer death rate in black women reflecting later diagnosis, less access to timely and high-quality prevention, higher prevalence to obesity. In addition, black women are more likely to be screened at lower resourced and non-accredited facilities and to experience longer intervals between screening mammograms and between abnormal findings and follow-up. "About 40% of health is driven by social and economic factors, and health behaviors account for about 30%." said Timiya Nolan, PhD. We should be increasing the number of high quality clinics if we want to improve the lives of millions of Americans.

There are times people of color face lower quality healthcare resulting in worse health outcomes. By some estimates a black women is 3 times more likely to die from pregnancy or pregnancy complications than white women. There is a growing body of evidence of structural racism  creating these disparities. Factors of lack of access to quality prenatal and postpartum care and higher rates of chronic conditions. An analysis by the Urban Institute researchers shows new mothers in states without expanded medicare are more than twice as likely to be uninsured putting mother and child at risk.

Title X is a nearly 50 year old family planning program and when the administration changed it put healthcare clinics at financial risk. The gag rule went into effect March 4, 2020 and limits the information that healthcare providers can give to their patients. In Bellingham, there was a example of a woman being sent home three times from an Emergency room because of this clause and it nearly killing her. Women now have to sort through deceptive clinics providing false and shameful misinformation.  To quote a doctor, "Abortions at or after 24 weeks are sometimes needed medically. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong".  Unfortunately 40% of hospital beds in Washington state so your care might be limited by religious doctrine instead of science.

If you need healthcare then do not hesitate to contact Planned Parenthood as they have clinics all over Washington State. There are groups like the Northwest Abortion Access Fund to assist with access. Naral Pro-Choice Washington, a grass roots advocacy group that believes every one should be able to make her decision about healthcare. Raiz is a program for outreach into the Latinx community. With restrictions locally, online markets have started offering contraceptives. In some cases, abortive medications are being shipped using telemedicine.

Providence Health Plan is the first insurer in Washington State to invoke "religious principles' clause. It will have 3 plans and in six counties. It is the only plan of it's type on the Washington Healthplan Finder. This company was approved and regulated by the Office of the Insurance Commissioner. If someone needs an abortion then they need to call 1-800-525-0127 to the Washington Department of Health. The Washington Department of Health works with 85 Family Planning Clinics. If you need to understand this plan or another plan on the Washington Healthplan Finder then feel free to contact us at Suzie Health Solutions. We are 1 of 8 Full Service Enrollment Centers that assist people in education and enrollment in healthcare plans without charging.
Getting ready for the game.

With the climate of restricting women's healthcare for political reason, it helps to find advisers that disclose all of your options. Yes, healthcare is limited by poverty and geography. Unfortunately, it is also limited by prejudice. If we want to improve the future then we have to focus on improving women's healthcare and increasing access to it.
